~ Smackdown comes on the air with highlights of Steve Austin’s reactions to the triple threat match being made on Raw, both the emotional and physical. Michael Cole then welcomes us to the show along with Tazz as they hype what’s on tap for tonight’s action, including The Undertaker taking on Kurt Angle and the last two King of the Ring qualifying matches. Plus three title matches are signed, with Kane, Matt Hardy and Rhyno putting their gold on the line while Chris Benoit & Chris Jericho defend the Tag Team Titles against Edge & Christian. In fact that match is now!

• WWF WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES: Chris Benoit & Chris Jericho © vs. Edge & Christian

Yep, the two #1 contenders for the world title are jerking the curtain in a match that has little to no buildup or reasoning behind it. Some main event push. Benoit and Christian start things off and exchange shots when Christian takes control and works Benoit over. Benoit comes back and goes for a whip, Christian reverses him into a corner but eats an elbow. Benoit chops Chrisitan down then hits a snap suplex for a two count. Christian fights back before tagging Edge in but Benoit nails him with a knee to the chest followed by a gutbuster. Jericho tags in and helps with a double-team then whips Edge and hits a double-underhook backbreaker for two. Jericho whips Edge when Edge goes for a Sunset Flip but Jericho rolls out of it and goes for the Walls of Jericho. Christian comes in for the save but Jericho releases Edge to fight him off and Christian rolls out to the floor. Jericho then whips Edge and goes for the bulldog but Edge ducks it and plants Jericho with the Edge-o-matic. Edge tees off on Jericho before tagging Christian to take over and Christian whips Jericho and hits a dropkick. Christian brings Jericho over to his corner then draws Benoit in to distract the referee while Edge chokes Jericho. Edge tags in and gets in his offense before tagging Christian back in and whipping Jericho into a corner. Edge drops down to the mat and Christian springs off him for the crossbody but Jericho is able to dodge it. Jericho bulldogs Edge then makes the tag to Benoit who clotheslines E&C then hits Edge with a German suplex. Benoit catches Christian with a German suplex then does another one on Edge and puts Christian in the Crossface. Jericho knocks Egde down to prevent the save but the referee orders him back, not seeing Christian tap out. Egde brings one of the tag belts in and waffles Benoit with it then decks Jericho and heads back to the corner. Meanwhile Christian manages to drape an arm over Benoit and the referee counts … but only gets a two count. Christian chokes Benoit on the mat then applies a front facelock as Benoit tries to inch his way toward his corner. Benoit backdrops Christian out of his way when Edge suddenly comes in and the referee orders him back out. Sure enough Benoit makes the tag to Jericho but the referee misses it and refuses to allow Jericho to come in.

Edge comes in without a tag and chokes Benoit on the mat then hits a hangman’s neckbreaker for a near fall. Edge whips Benoit and Benoit comes back with a crossbody for a two. Benoit goes for his corner but Edge pulls him away then tags Christian. Benoit fights back but Christian stops that with a Slop Drop on the knee for a near fall. Christian applies a chinlock over his knee then tags Edge who snapmares Benoit and slaps on his own chinlock. Benoit fights out of it and tries to rally but Edge hits a knee to the chest then Christian tags in and takes over. Christian whips Benoit into a corner but eats a boot and Benoit comes out of there but runs into a clothesline. Christian hops to the middle rope and goes for a sledge but Benoit catches him into a belly-to-belly suplex. Both men head toward their corners and Christian tags Edge but this time Benoit makes the hot tag to Jericho. Jericho shoulderblocks Edge and hits a clothesline followed by a flying forearm then gets in a shot on Christian. Jericho goes to whip Edge and Edge reverses him into Christian on the apron then rolls him up but only gets a two count. Edge whips Jericho into a corner and eats an elbow, Jericho then climbs to the top rope but Christian is back up and trips Jericho, causing him to straddle the turnbuckle. Christian climbs the ropes and sets Jericho up while Edge sets Christian up and the two combine for a stackplex! Edge covers Jericho but Benoit climbs to the top rope and makes the save with the diving headbutt on Edge. All four men are down as the referee starts the count when Edge manages to cover Edge but only gets a near fall. Edge and Jericho struggle back to their feet when Christian goes for a spear but misses Jericho and nails Edge! Benoit tosses Christian over the ropes while Jericho nails Edge with the Lionsault and gets the three to retain! (10:43) Pretty solid, if formulaic, tag match with some good action. Thing is I’m not sure actually did anything to build the triple threat match. Maybe they should have done this match on Raw and have the Chrises drop the titles since they even need them anymore at this point. **½

Anyway Benoit and Jericho celebrate their title defense while E&C get to their feet when Edge shoves Christian down and yells at him for his botched spear! E&C continue arguing when Edge starts to leave but Christian stops his departure and they stand nose-to-nose! However nothing comes of it and the two leave the ring though are still not happy as we go to commercial.

Now let’s watch as Benoit and Jericho are pretty much forgotten for the rest of the show other than a mention here or there. Just thought I’d point that out.

~ Back from break we find Spike and Molly on a stairwell sharing the latest Raw Magaine when the Dudleys walk up behind “Romeo and Juliet” demanding to talk with Spike alone. Molly heads out as D’Von calls Spike a disgrace for choosing Molly over his own flesh and blood on Monday while Bubba accuses Spike of thinking about himself and Molly but not about them. Bubba then tells Spike that if he gets in any trouble tonight he’s on his own because they won’t be thinking about him. The Dudleys head out as Spike wonders what trouble could he get into and I think we just saw some foreshadowing.

• The Big Show vs. Raven – King of the Ring Qualifying Match

Sigh. Raven dodges Show to start and gets in the first shots but Show shurgs them off and throws him into a corner. Show knocks through the ropes with a big boot then goes out and hits a giant chop followed by a headbutt. Show then does a three-point stance and goes for a shouldertackle but misses Raven runs right into the steps. Show is favoring his arm as Raven climbs in the ring and dropkicks him through the ropes but it has little effect. Show climbs in and Raven kicks him in the face when Show shoves him away but Raven boots him in the head. However Show grabs Raven by the throat then chokeslams him with one arm and easily grabs the seventh KOTR spot. (1:37) There’s your serving of squash, people.

~ Backstage Steve Austin is making his way somewhere with a clipboard in hand when he bumps into Sgt. Slaughter and apologizes for all the Stunners he gave him long ago then shakes his hand and asks about his family. Austin then tells Slaughter about his petiton which says him having to wrestle Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho is unfair and asks for his signature. Slaughter agrees it is unfair and adds his name to the list, from one champion to another, then head out. Kevin Kelly walks up and asks Austin to explain his petiton for us and Austin says his petiton states the Triple Threat WWF Title match at King of the Ring is unfair and should be canceled. Austin says he’s been going to airports and shopping malls all over America getting signatures and support from people and has over a thousand already. Austin then says he plans to present the petition to Linda McMahon on Raw and feels Linda will have to listen to the people and cancel the match. Austin then asks Kevin to sign the petition as well.

~ Back from break we find Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn and Terri at a restaurant waiting for Malenko’s date to arrive. Malenko tells Terri that he has a bad feeling about this double date and Terri assumes it’s because he’s married. Malenko explains he has a chance to score with a model and is worried Saturn is going to mess things up for him. Eventually the model (Sherry) arrives and Malenko introduces her to Terri and Saturn, who’s busy looking at a picture. Once Saturn turns around he tells Sherry that she smells like a viking and Malenko feels it’s going to be a long night. I bet he’s not the only one.

• WWF EUROPEAN TITLE: Matt Hardy © vs. K-Kwik

Yes, K-Kwik was still around by this time though he was mainly hanging around on the weekend shows, which makes it hard to understand how he got a title shot on one of the main programs. Both men lockup to start and Matt goes into a headlock, K-Kwik shoves him away but eats a shoudlerblock. Matt gets an armwringer and works over the arm when K-Kwik goes for a whip. Matt reverses it and goes for a hiptoss but K-Kwik counters it into a body scissors rollup that gets a near fall. Matt snapmares K-Kwik for his own near fall and we have a stalemate before Matt slaps on a hammerlock. K-Kwik elbows out then rolls Matt up with his feet on the ropes for a two as Lita complains to the referee. I guess that makes K-Kwik the heel of this match. Matt goes for a whip and K-Kwik reverses it but Matt stops himself before he collides with Lita on the apron, allowing K-Kwik to hit a forearm from behind. K-Kwik goes for a whip, Matt reverses him into a corner but K-Kwik lifts himself over Matt and does a backflip before connecting with a Memphis sidekick. Matt quickly regains control and whips K-Kwik but K-Kwik comes back with a crossboy that gets a two count. K-Kwik slaps on a front facelock and Matt starts to fight out of it but K-Kwik stops it with a knee to the chest. K-Kwik comes off the ropes and goes for a body scissors but Matt counters it into a wheelbarrow suplex. Matt connects with several hard right hands and follows it up with the takedown clothesline for a two count. Matt slams K-Kwik then hops to the middle rope and connects with the guillotine legdrop for another near fall. Matt goes for the Twist of Fate but K-Kwik drives him into a corner and hits a suplex. K-Kwik climbs to the top and mocks Matt before leaping off but Matt catches him with a kick then hits the Twist of Fate for the win. (4:19) Back to Jakked for you, Ron. Okay but not great match and the result was never in doubt. **

~ Backstage Steve Austin is getting some guy in a phone booth to sing his petition then bumps into Jim Ross and cracks some jokes with him while smiling. Austin then turns serious and presents JR with the petition, demanding he add his name to it, JR reluctantly agrees to sign it but does so under duress. JR then walks off and Austin watches him leave with a sneer on his face as we go to commercial.

~ Back from break Cole and Tazz talk about the deranged person who’s been stalking the Undertaker’s wife Sara and show the stalker’s latest tape from Raw before wondering about Taker’s mentality in his match later.

~ Backstage we find X-Pac adressing his X-Factor mates who are grumbling about not getting noticed in the WWF. X-Pac tells them it takes gold to get noticed here and emphazies how important it is for Albert to beat Kane tonight. Suddenly Kurt Angle walks up wanting a moment and mentions Albert has Kane but he’s facing Kane’s brother next. Angle suggests they could all work together to get what they want and the X-Factor guys are on board with that idea. Angle then realizes that Credible’s name sounds just like “Just Incredible” and leaves while X-Pac snickers at him.

~ We then check back on the Radicalz’ the double date with Sherry laughing at Saturn’s random ramblings. Sherry then complements Malenko on his friend being so hysterical and Malenko mumbles that Saturn is a real riot. The waiter next comes up to their table ready to take their order when Saturn asks him if he has any dinosaurs. Saturn tells Sherry someting about dinosaurs eating gravy and all Malenko can do his hold his head in his hand.

~ Back at the arena William Regal complements Tajiri for standing up to Steve Austin despite taking a good beating and that he was so impressed with him he’s going to give him a chance to wrestle tonight by entering him in the King of the Ring Tournament. Tajiri gets all excited about his big chance when Austin comes in and Tajiri hides behind Regal. Austin claims Monday was a misunderstanding and gives Regal his petition for him to sign which he happily does then asks Tajiri to add his signature as well. Once Tajiri signs the petiton Austin offers a hand but Tajiri bows and they go back and forth until Austin leaves.

~ Back from break Undertaker rides out to the ring on his motorcycle then Angle comes out but first gets on the mic. Angle chastises Taker for interupting his address to Shane McMahon on Raw and decides to continue what he started. Angle tells Shane he’s an American superhero and mentions being inducted into the National Wresling Hall of Fame. Angle says he’ll be the first back-to-back KOTR winner so he feels a straight-up match with Shane would be unfair. Angle mentions Shane once claiming to be from the mean streets of Greenwich so he challenges him to a street fight. Angle then demands an apology from Taker but knows he won’t get one so he’ll have to beat it out of him.

• The Undertaker vs. Kurt Angle

Angle gets in the first shots but Taker shurgs them off and gets in his shots then pummels him in a corner. Taker whips Angle into the opposite corner and hits a clothesline then follows it up with a sidewalk slam. Taker comes off the ropes with an elbowdrop and covers Angle … but pulls him up at 2 instead of taking the pin. Taker chokes Angle on the mat and chases the referee out to the floor but Angle comes back with an elbow. Angle hammers away at Taker in a corner and charges at him then eats a boot but comes back with a suplex. Angle continues his offense on Taker and chokes him but Taker throws Angle in the corner and wails on him. Taker then whips Angle and Angle kicks the face but Taker no-sells it and backdrops him over the ropes. Taker brings Angle back in the ring but tosses the steps in as well as the referee warns him not to use them. Taker pays the referee no heed as he rams the steps into Angle’s face and that’ll do it for this one. (2:36) Well that was a whole lot of nothing, plus X-Factor didn’t even get the chance to help Angle cheat. DUD

Anyway Taker could care less about being DQ’ed and continues assautling Angle and even scares the referee away. X-Pac and Justin Credible then run in looking to come to Angle’s aid (a little too late, guys) but Taker is able to fight both of them off and hit chokeslams on each of them. I guess Albert decided not to join them and risk injury before his big title match. Taker then finishes X-Pac off with the Last Ride while Angle makes his escape. Just seemed like a waster there, they could have had Albert lay Taker out with the BaldoBomb to add some more heat to his match with Kane or something.

~ Back from break we find Austin talking to some backstage guy about signing the petiton. Moving right along…

• WWF HARDCORE TITLE: Rhyno © vs. Test

Rhyno gets in the first shots and goes for a whip but Test reverses him into a corner and hits a clothesline. Test whips Rhyno into the opposite corner and hits another clothesline then tosses him out through the ropes. Test goes out and pounds away on Rhyno then goes for a whip but Rhyno reverses him into the barricade. Rhyno tosses a number of weapons in the ring before thowing Test in as well but Test greets him with a trash lid. Test readies another swing but Rhyno clubs him in the chest with a fire extiguisher and stomps away at his ribs. Rhyno whacks Test with a trash lid and whips him into a corner then shoulderblocks him in his injured chest. Rhyno climbs to the top rope for something but Test tosses a trash can right into Rhyno’s face to cut him off. Rhyno is reeling as Test gets in his shots then climbs up himself and superplexes Rhyno through a trash can! Test goes for the big boot and misses it but comes back with the pump-handle slam .. and only gets a two count. Test goes out and brings a table in the ring but Rhyno whacks him with a lid then props the table in a corner. Rhyno readies for the Gore through the table but Test cuts him off then sets him for a running powerbomb. Rhyno slips out of there but Test clotheslines him down then moves the table to the center of the ring. Rhyno comes back and sets Test up for a powerbomb through the table but Test counters with it a backdrop. Test then plants Rhyno with the Full Nelson slam before rolling him onto the table. Test climbs to the top rope and connects with a flying elbowdrop on Rhyno that sends him through the table but hurts himself as well. Both men are down … when the WCW logo appears on the OvalTron signaling the arrival of Shane McMahon. Sure enough Shane dances his way out to the stage then points to the back and everyone’s wondering which WCW person he’s bringing out this time. Turns out this week’s debut is … Stacy Kiebler! Shane and Stacy walk down the ramp and Stacy struts her stuff in front of Rhyno who seems mesermized by her. Test then tosses a trash can at Rhyno (who catches it) then boots the can in his face and gets the three count and the title! (6:35) Test celebrates his second Hardcore title win while security comes out to escort Shane and Stacy to the back. I guess with Rhyno in the KOTR tournamet they decided to let Test borrow the title for a bit. *½

~ Backstage Austin meets up with Howard Finkel and gets his signature added to his petiton.

~ Back from break we get footage of Shane and Stacy being escorted from the building during the break. Shane and Stacy climb in their limo as Shane asks the security guys to tell Vince that WCW is definitely heating up. I wonder what that could mean.

• Crash Holly vs. Tajiri (w/William Regal) – King of the Ring Qualifying Match

Our last KOTR qualifier sees Tajiri wrestling his first WWF match since his breif appearences in 1997. Both men lockup to start off and Crash goes to a waistlock but Tajiti powers out of it and gets an armbar. Tajiri goes into a hammerlock when Crash reverses it and they go back and forth until Crash gets a headlock. Crash goes into an armbar then whips Tajiri but Tajari fakes Crash out then backdrops him over the ropes. Crash lands on his feet on the apron but Tajiri nails Crash with a stiff kick that knocks him off to the floor. Crash climbs back in and Tajiri hits some chops in a corner but Crash reverses positions and gets in his shots. Crash sets Tajiri on the top rope and goes up himself but Tajiri slips out and sets Crash in the tree of woe. Tajiri chokes Crash with his boot then hits a baseball slide to the face and Regal is impressed by his protegee. Tajiri whips Crash when Crash rolls him up for a two count but Tajiri comes back with another stiff kick. Tajiri whips Crash looking for a spinkick but Crash fakes him out then whips him and connects with an elbow. Crash follows it up with a clothesline and goes for a whip, Tajiri reverses him into a corner but eats a boot. Crash climbs to the top rope and hits a missile dropick that gets him a near fall then whips Tajiri into a corner. Crash charges at him but Tajiri lifts himself over Crash then wraps him up with the Tarantula around the ropes! Tajiri releases Crash and hits a inverted suplex then connects with the buzzsaw kick and gets the victory to advance. (3:09) Very impressive debut for Tajiri which almost makes up for the past few weeks he was used. The awestruck Regal congradulates his protigee and we have our round of eight set up. **

~ Backstage we find Steve Austin in the restroom searching for The Big Show who tells him that he’s on the john. And of course this leads to some bathroom jokes so let’s just say Austin gets Show to sign the petition and move on.

~ Back from break we check in on the double date as Saturn tricks Sherry into saying she “ate the garbage can”. Malenko gets tired of Saturn entertaining his date so he tells her something about pigones wearing lipstick. Naturally Sherry doesn’t understand that while Terri doesn’t like this anymore than Malenko does.

~ Back at the arena Kevin Kelly interviews Test on beating Rhyno and once again becoming Hardcore Champion. Test says the Hardcore Title is the hardest title to win and even harder to defend but he welcomes all challengers. Test then starts talking about Shane and Stacy when another video from the Black Scorpion pops up on the monitor. The stalker says that Undertaker left Sara alone again as he spies her on an exercise bike with a cop near her. The stalker tells Taker there’s no protection from him because what he wants is more than [Taker] ever imagined. As Taker appears and watches the monitor the staker says he’s tired of Taker’s gamesmanship and his twisted mind. The stalker finishes by saying it’s time for him to come forward and for his dreams to come true as the video cuts out. All Taker can do is smack the set in frustration as Cole and Tazz comment on the latest in this situation.

~ Elsewhere Spike and Molly are talking about how great this week has been when Steve Austin walks up to them. Austin greets the lovebirds before asking Spike to sign his petition then asks for his “bimbo girlfriend” to sign as well. Spike takes exception and tells Austin he can’t call Molly that and Austin says he can call her anything he wants to. Spike tells Austin that he can’t talk to his girlfriend like that and Austin laughs at him before calling Molly a tramp. Spike then says he doesn’t care who Austin is, he can’t talk to Molly like that then proceeds to rip up the petition! Spike and Molly then take off while Austin is stunned as he looks down at his destroyed petition, ready to snap. I guess that was the trouble the Dudleys warned Spike they wouldn’t be bailing him out of.

~ Back from break we get a replay of Spike standing up for Molly against Austin by ripping up his petition. We then find William Regal congradulating Tajiri on his win and advancing to the KOTR quarterfinals on Monday. Austin then barges in the room crying about Spike destroying his petiton and ruining every single thing he’s done. Austin demands a match with Spike tonight and even demands to put his WWF Title up and Regal books the match. Hey, we finally got a main event booked for this show.

• WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: Kane © vs. Albert

So they’re seemingly blowing this feud off here instead of waiting for the pay-per-view. Not surprisnigly Albert is alone for this match after Undertaker took out X-Pac and Justin Credible earlier. Both men exchange shots to start when Kane gets the advantage and pounds away at Albert in a corner. Kane whips Albert into the opposite corner but eats a boot and Albert comes out but runs into a powerslam. Albert rams Kane into a turnbuckle and clubs him down then whips him into a corner but misses the Avalanhce. Kane connects with his own splash then goes for a whip but Albert reverses and hot shots Kane on the ropes. Albert follows up with a bodyblock and boots Kane in the head then Kane fights back but Albert stops that. Albert whips Kane and presses him up before slamming him then follows it up with a running kick to the ribs. Kane fights back again but Albert regains control and plants him with a butterfly suplex that gets a near fall. Albert goes for a splash but misses it when Kane sits up and Kane goes for a whip but Albert reverses it. Albert lowers the head and Kane hits a neckbreaker then goes for a whip but Albert counters into a clothesline. Albert hits the Avalanche then whips him into the other corner and goes for another Avalanche but eats an elbow. Kane follows it up with a big boot then climbs to the top rope and connects with the flying clothesline. Kane hits a running powerslam for a two then grabs Albert for a chokeslam but Albert counters with a DDT! Albert drapes an arm over Kane but only gets two then hits the bicycle kick but that doesn’t get the three either. Albert gets frustrated as he grabs Kane looking to hit the Baldobomb but Kane counters with a dropkick. Albert whips Kane one more time but Kane comes back with a chokeslam and that gets him the three to retain. (5:23) Wow, that was a lot-better-than-expected match there, with some cool counters to boot. Now Kane getting a clean win should mean this feud is done, but not so fast. **½

~ Back at the double date desert is served but Saturn gets his order of a bowl of mustard and crayons on the side. Sherry lets Saturn sample some of her desert and Malenko is shaking his head while Terri has has enough of this. Terri whispers something in Malenko’s ear and leaves her seat while Malenko gets Saturn’s attention with a spoon. Terri grabs a serving tray and swings it at Sherri but Sherri ducks while Saturn takes the shot right to the head. Sherry then runs off with Malenko promising to call her while Terri apologizes to Saturn who says “Yathzee!”

• WWF WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Stone Cold Steve Austin © vs. Spike Dudley

Spike is rarin’ to go for this title match while Austin storms out with the tattered remains of his petiton. Austin wastes no time pounding on Spike and stomping him down as Molly makes her way out to ringside. Austin throws Spike into a cornerpost and continues stomping away on him then chokes him with his boot. Spike tries to pull himself to his feet and get in his shots but they have no effect and Austing rakes his face. Ausitn rams Spike into a buckle and throws him over the ropes then goes out and rams him into the steps. Austin drops Spike onto the barricade but Spike comes back and tosses Austin over the announce table. Spike finally gets some offense as he wails on Austin then bites his face as Molly cheers him on from nearby. Spike stomps on Austin and goes for a whip but Austin reverses him into the steps to close that window. Austin throws Spike into the announce table and tosses him back in the ring then puts him in the Crossface. Austin lets go of Spike then puts him in the Walls of Jericho while letting everyone get a look of his eyes. Austin throws Spike into a corner and clubs him in the back when Spike manages to kick him below the belt. Austin is relling as Spike tries to recover and comes out of the corner but Austin catches him with a spinebuster. Austin flips Spike off before hitting the Stunner then hooks both legs and holds the pants for the three. (4:32) See, Mike Awesome, it’s not that hard to beat Spike in a world title defense. Obvious suqash but an entertaining one and the crowd was actually into it.

Austin poses with his belt and starts to leave but then turns back once he sees Molly tending to Spike. Austin heads back in the ring with a chair in hand and Molly flees while Austin works Spike over with the chair. Molly then goes back in the ring for whatever reason but Austin looks at her with some evil intentions in mind. Austin starts to advance on her when Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho both run in the ring brandishing chairs to remind everyone what the KOTR main event is. Austin swings his chair at Benoit but misses while Jericho makes it in and gets in a chair shot to the back. Austin flees up the ramp holding his back while Benoit and Jericho help Molly check on Spike and we’re out.

Conclusion: This wasn’t a terrible episode of Smackdown, it fact it had some decent action on it, including the opening tag bout, the surprising Kane/Albert match and Tajiri’s debut. It just felt too much like The Austin Show as Austin was in just about every segment, and the lame storyline with the petition almost made it feel like a bad sitcom plot. Plus Benoit and Jericho continue to be buried as they were only featured in the meaningless opener and promptly forgotten about until the last few minutes, while Spike got the main event slot. Yes it built Austin up as a paranoid psychotic but it could have been done without ruining the Chrises’ already dying push. Overall an okay two hours but you won’t really miss anything by skipping it.
